Siedemnastego grudnia 2001 roku Wspólnota "Pustynia w mieście" otrzymała publiczną osobowość prawną a O. Zygmunt Zapaśnik został jej opiekunem Duchowym. Wspólnota została zatwierdzona dekretem biskupim jako stowarzyszenie katolickie. Został również zatwierdzony regulamin i statut wspólnoty.
